Disability pension woes

Twenty-five-year-old Abbas Jamil was born totally blind to a low income family living in Delhi. Abbas has two sisters who are also blind by birth. His father was burdened with raising four children, with special care for the three visually impaired kids.
 
Fortunately, Abbas was admitted to a special school run by Blind Relief Association in New Delhi. Here he acquired the necessary reading, writing and mobility skills. Encouraged by other visually impaired students and teachers, he was keen on making an independent future for himself.

Aspiring for financial independence

Twenty-six-year-old Sunikshya Panigrah hails from Kalahandi district in Odisha. She was born with an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa which results in gradual vision loss. Currently, Sunikshya has an 80% vision impairment.
 
For persons with low vision, there are various tools available to perform activities of daily living. Sunikshya uses the magnifier and zoom function to see display content on screen, whether it is her phone or on the computer.

Thirty-eight-year-old Sabzar is a resident of Kokernag, a small town in Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir. He is a person with low vision by birth, presently living with a disability of nearly 85%. Coming from a low income family in a remote village in Kashmir, Sabzar did not get a chance to study. He lost his mother early, and now his brother manages to earn some for the family. His younger sister is also blind.

HC: Give free help to visually impaired

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Wednesday  asked the Railways to provide free  human assistance to visually-impaired persons at  major stations.
A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice  Manmohan, which was hearing a petition initiated by the high  court on its own for making rail travel disabled friendly,  asked the Railways to consider providing the facility on its  own or through a CSR initiative.
