Transformation through Technology

22 year old Pramod, from Pali Rajasthan began losing his eyesight a few years ago. He heard about the Eyeway toll free number on the radio and got in touch with us to seek guidance and support. Pramod had completely stopped using computers because he was unaware of the many software and assistive technology that enabled accessibility.  He was unsure of how to take his life forward. Our counsellors assured him that with the right training, technology and software he could resume computer and mobile usage and lead a normal life.

Battling Ignorance

Santosh, a resident of Ballia Uttar Pradesh, was denied an ATM card by his local bank branch.  A friend advised him to seek support from the counsellors at the Eyeway Helpdesk. The helpdesk informed Santosh that the bank was denying him of his basic rights. They forwarded to him the RBI and IBA guidelines that clearly state that a visually impaired person cannot be denied an ATM card. The guidelines also mandate banks to make their services accessible to visually impaired customers.

Adopting Technology to become Empowered

Nineteen year old Rakesh, a resident of Ramgarh, Jharkhand, found out about the Eyeway Helpdesk through a friend. He called the helpdesk curious to know whether a visually impaired person could operate a computer. Not only did our counsellors assure Rakesh of this possibility they also shared with him information about the many available software and apps that enabled visually impaired persons to access computers, smart phones, books. Rakesh, having shown interest in gaining some computer skills, was guided to the National Association for Blind(NAB), Jamshedhpur.

Do we really care for special children?

Thu, 01/05/2017 - 12:44 -- geeta.nair

Of course it is a positive development to term children with disabilities ‘special or gifted children’ but similar things should happen in Urdu, Sindhi and other languages as we still tend to refer to them as maazoorin Urdu/Sindhi or have just translated the same word which is not understood very well. Changing a language is the first and foremost step towards changing behaviour of the public at large. But it appears that it has failed to influence the existing belief, “once disable, always disable”. As a result, special children are considered a liability, burden and a shame.

Thu, 01/05/2017 - 10:17 -- geeta.nair

Visually impaired persons who had organized a function to mark the World Braille Day turned emotional after invited officials skipped the event at SP College here.

The event was organized by J&K Welfare Association for Blind, a group of visually impaired persons. The function was scheduled to start at 10:30 am, however, it was delayed as organizers waited for the officials who were invited to the function.

However, as the officials did not turn up, many visually impaired persons turned emotional and burst into tears.

Demonetization Blues

Govt needs to ensure that the recent demonetization does not lead to financial exclusion of the blind and visually impaired citizens

If the recent demonetization of 1000 and 500 rupee notes has to be made into a success for all sections of society then one needs to pay attention to the below listed red flags as far as persons with blindness and visual impairment are concerned. A cashless digital economy may imply near financial exclusion of the blind population from the mainstream economy.
